Well while disability can be temporary, most people applying for it are permanently disabled. The site is here:
http://www.ssa.gov/
SSI is only available if you have not worked enough quarters to qualify for SS disability and SSD is not available. You cannot get both, it is one or the other.
Expect to get denied at first and then go find someone who does social security representation (very few people will help you with the original application since they are not allowed to charge you for doing it but they CAN charge you on a reconsideration).
But you may also want to go to your local unemployment office and talk to them about vocational rehabilitation which seems more in line with your goals.

What a coincidence, I not only share your name, but also the same situation. Most people think that if you can go to college, you are not disabled, least of all mentally. But being in the same situation, I realize that you probably do not enjoy the stigma of being mentally disabled. I can only wish I would be legally allowed to operate a motor vehicle. So I could get a job further than walking distance. Because there is not any "career" opportunities within walking distance of my home. So you see, I too wish to seek employment further than my feet can take me, in a reasonable amount of time. I also enjoy working evenings, but this I can change, and work anytime around the clock, as long as they pay me well enough.-Mr.Michael S.Becker

You need to go to your Soc Sec office. Bring as much documentation as you can. Do you have a psychiatrist and/or phycologist? If you're currently working, they won't even consider you.......personal experience. In my case, it's my ankle, but I had 6 years worth of x-rays & 3 orthropedic surgeons. I would also call ahead for an appointment. They will give you a mini-interview over the phone. E-mail me if I can help.

as mentioned you need to go to the social security office and get some information on how to apply for disability, which will take a while to process.
