They look like they're about twice as expensive. Will a low grade Core 2 Duo 1.86 ghz for instance be faster that a regular 3.0 ghz dual core processor????????

I agree with the person who said that 1.86 is only one of the DUO processors. Also in a battle of a Pentium 4 HT 3.6 and a 1.86 Core 2 Duo, the Core 2 Duo would DESTROY !!! the Pentium 4 processor. The architecture of Core 2 Duo has been dramatically modified from the architecture of previous processors. The modified architecture allows for greater performance and studies show that because there are two cores (processing cores) in the Core 2 Duo, heat is minimized rather than having two individual processors give off heat. The cores also have shared memory which allows for more parallel processing.

Frist the new core 2 duo are cheap compared to what they can do. For example a Intel e6600 is around $360 and an amd fx62 is around $1100. There performance the e6600 beats or matches the fx 62 in every test. Also the e6600 power consummation is way lower and that means more overclocking. The new Intel cores are just built better internally, that's why there better.

You only get a 50% increase in power for every processor that you add. Secondly, the OS would have to be able to support the technology. Using windows XP you would probably get better performance on the 3.0 rather than the 1.86 because Windows is not designed to fully use the potential of that processor.

whats great about the core 2 duo cpu's?

well for 1 its certaintly faster than single cpu's. and when they say that it is 1.86 gh, that means that it is refering to just 1 of those core 2 duo processors, meaning that it is actually 3.7 gh.

if you are looking for speed on your comp, then u should get it. but if u are not satisfied ith the speed your processor brings to u now, then i would definetely upgrade it to a dual cpu. good luck:)
