It depends more on what your maintenance was like before your cat forced this situation on you. If you have an average stocked tank, you should be changing around 20% of the water weekly. It would only be a day or so for the water to reach the same parameters as before, less the nitrates removed from changing the water, which is a good thing. This is assuming you kept your filter media wet in tank or dechlored tap[ water. Large water changes are a trick to get fish to spawn.

I have an overstocked breeding setup, most tanks get 75% or better changed out weekly. I don't think twice about filling a tank with 100% fresh water, and adding a mature filter & fish. As fish get sold I shut down tanks & run the filter on another until it is needed.

If you let your filter media dry out the tank will go through cycling again. This could take anywhere from a couple days to a few weeks, depending on how dry it got.

If you can somehow get yourself a wooden canope for the top of your tank - you will be much better off. I too have cats, and have a canope on my main tank. My feeder tank is only 15g, but if the cats wanted to they could probably get into it - I've been lucky thus far that they are well behaved.

But what you will want to do is watch your parameters for the Nitrogen cycle. If it begins to reoccur (which may happen all over again depending on what kinds of biological filter you have) you will want to do check the water daily, and possibly (if necessary) do water changes as well.

If you do not have a water testing kit - I highly recommend this...

Good luck!

The tank sounds fine. For your own peace of mind, you could check the chemical balances to see that everything is where it should be. Run your filter, and change any filter cartridge or floss, as well as charcoal, and you should be fine.

Lucky for the cat you did not have Pirahnas or an electric eel!!

it will probably take a day or 2 to get back to normal... use the chemical cycle to help the process along... its full of beneficial bacteria.
