Depends on the wood. If there is paint or varnish on the wood, you will need to sand or strip off all the old paint/varnish. After you have a clean surface lightly sand the whole things. Use light grade steel wood to finish and make sure all of the debris from sanding is off the desk and out of the room. If you want to stain the wood desk, I recommend Minwax. If you want to paint the desk a bright color or neutral color I would use an enamal paint. Enamel takes a lot of abuse and cleans up nicely.

first get it clean and free of any junk, dirt, etc... Use a mild detergent, like TSP(Trisodium Phosphate) which you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. Next would be to prime. Use Kilz, and not any spray type of primer. Try to use a roller brush as much as possible, or a sprayer if you can afford it. But the roller brush on the flat surfaces, then brush the detail parts. Next, if I was you, I'd use an eggshell or satin finish latex based paint, if possible use an exterior paint as they seem to hold up better.

Remove all coats of varnish and smoothen with sandpaper ....or if it is raw, untreated wood, just use sandpaper to smoothen it. Use an undercoat for wood first, then apply the paint. Ask at hardware store about right paints and paintbrushes to use, as well as how to paint it....but mostly paint containers have instructions on the. BUT - the brush strokes should be made in one direction only - from side to side or up and down.... otherwise it makes an unequal pattern.

You need to strip it first with paint remover as the spray paint would not have a grip.I got a stripper one time that you just brushed on and then wiped it off removing all the lacquer with it.Can't remember the brand but a hardware store should be able to recommend one.

Hire someone. Seriously all kidding aside, I really don't know as I have never painted a wooden desk before either.
My suggestion would be to ask someone at your local Lowes or Home Depot for suggestions and/or tips.
Good Luck and have fun.

Spray is easiest because it gets in all of the cracks and coats quickly. Just practice on a scrap piece first as spraying isn't as easy as it looks.
