No but it is always better to use one to protect your computer desk and base of mouse.

No, optical mice do not require mouse pads because they do not have the ball underneath. I have an optical mouse but still use a pad to protect my desk and cuz I have the padding that protects my wrist from being in an uncomfortable postion.

Optical mice doesn't require a special surface, such as a mouse pad.

nope. not necessary. but you can always get mice pads that are designed for the optical-mouse user, with enhanced something or another. saw one at RadioShack. haha.

The only time you need to use a mouse pad is when you use your mouse on clear glass tabletop like I do.

no you do not need a mouse pad, but you cannot use them on reflective surface.

The first one I had worked better on a mousepad than on the desk.

The one I have now doesn't seem to care.

No, but I would suggest it as it will 'run' smoother on such a surface and be less likely to do damage to either surface.

no they don't. That's why they are so great. No clogged up mice any more.
