Its all about marketing- its far easier to target someone if you know their household income and needs than to just waste money on people that won't buy your product.
Why do you think its bad when companys put spyware on your computer to monitor where you go on the net?

If you need credit, insurance, or other things that present a risk for the provider, they will want to know about your finances. How much you make, how well you pay your bills, how stable you are. That information is gathered in many ways.
