Everyone has his/her own list of favorite mathematicians of course. But the general idea is that the three greatest ever to live were Archimedes, Newton and Gauss. To these you may add any two to your liking and recommendations are plenty above. Let me just put my 2 cents in by recommending Euler for his enormous productivity despite his blindeness and Emmy Noether for being one of the two fathers (or mother in her case) of commutative algebra in an age when prejudice against woman sholars were plentiful.
