The Yamaha R1 is built using a middleweight frame (600cc class), but features a 4-stroke 998cc, liquid-cooled, fuel injected DOHC in-line 4 cylinder engine and a constant-mesh 6-speed transmission, and sends roughly 155-bhp to the rear tire.
The R6 is all-new for 2006, and features a highly-tuned 4-stroke 599cc, liquid-cooled, fuel injected, DOHC in-line 4 cylinder with a wet back-torque limiting slipper clutch and a constant-mesh 6-speed transmission that sends roughly 114-bhp to the rear tire.
Both are insainly fast bikes, but the R1 is faster just because it has an extra 400cc on it's little brother. Top-end is higher on the R1 because of this. The R1 also features dual underseat titanium exhaust, which looks pretty hot. But, the new R6 gets a titanium swingarm-exiting exhaust with Yamaha EXUP valve. Both are great bike, but the distinguishing feature is the R6 can rev higher than any production bike for sale right now- 17,600 rpm redline. The problem with this is at low rpm the R6 is gutless and has no power, so you really have to rev the piss outta it to get anything.
Also, try www.yamaha-motor.com and research them using the manufactures website.

FIRST OF ALL........I_Love_Chick, Is WRONG!!!! I guess her or his dad is not teaching his kid nothing. The Yzf R6 is a 600cc and a Yzf R1 is a 1000cc. Therefore, A R1 has more torge and power, better handeling. A R1 is a awesome bike for more experience riders. It has alot of power. A Yzf R6, is more of a beginners bike which is stil alot of power, Dont get me wrong. It just has way less power and less weight as an R1.

>please spare me the warnings That is at odds with your basic question. No, they are not novice bikes, they are not designed or intended to be, to get the best from the R6 (especially the R6 but the basics apply to all 600cc sportsbikes) you need to rev above 10,000 rpms, there is a big dip in the output against revs below that. They are also fairly tall, there is only one way for you to find out if you can fit on one, put on your helmet, jacket, trousers, boots and gloves then sit on one. You are being treated like a noob because you are one, there is nothing wrong with that – everyone of us had to start somewhere.

"andrew s" got it right.
R1 = 1000cc
R6 = 600cc
"yazukka" is correct if you were wondering about the technical differences.
