I think it would greatly impact the view held by many that we(earth) are the center of the universe, etc. Lots of spiritual and scientific implications. I think people would be much more fearful than they already are.
We would probably see a proliferation of enterprising entrepreneurs and corporations figuring out how to capitalize on it. If there's a buck to be made, someone, somewhere, will figure out how to do it.

we'll have to rethink our religious point of view but mostly it depends on the aliens and the contact. If it's something like War of the World or Independance day, we are in trouble but if they are peaceful and have space travel, we could benefit a lot.

If this should happen. we as a human race would adapt and adjust. just like war and peace. now we are doing a lot more killing than communicating. they might as well be aliens. are they.

If extraterrestrial beings do visit us they'd be so a ways stepped forward technologically they would not be afflicted with the primitive human race. purely seem @ the Hitch-hikers handbook to the galaxy.

People would talk about something else besides Pluto, the latest hurricane, or American Idol for about three days, then forget all about it.

the church fathers and political leaders would freak out publicly, and the rest of us would get up the next morning and go to work just like always.

I think most religions would have to re-think things.
Then it would depend on if they came in peace or not, I'd bet most likely NOT.
