John Saul, and Charles Dickens.
i have many more but my all-time favorite is Wally Lamb for his book I Know This Much is True.

I agree, few modern writers can compete with the breadth of genre that Stephen King writes so well in. In addition, I adore John Irving and Anne Tyler. Their characters and stories are so real.
