I think the whole "yuppy" is a awful stereotype. Just because you work a nine to five does not make you a bad person. i do not judge others because they choose a different life than I do. Why is it that when my friends and I go downtown, we get snarled at by folks who whisper things under their breath. This is not fair at all. I am a young Afro-Amer professional male...I'm a rarety, but I am getting treated like the "man" himself. I did not create the system that you fell a victim of, don't blame me buddy.
Sorry to rant, but its the mid week hump, I am actually dreading going downtown because of the image I am being portrayed in....When did it become wrong to be successful....I am very concious and very liberal, I just am also successful..how is this a bad thing??

Well fortunately, you're over half way of hump day and maybe that would make you feel a little bit better. I'm also glad that you can think because you are concious....it's easier that way.
The system has all kinds of labels for about anyone you can think of. I'm sure you could think of some for me since I am not liberal.
Be proud of what you were blessed with...just don't flaunt it! Share it and be gracious.
You may have worked hard and had some major obstacles to overcome and don't deserve name calling.
However, think back about somehow someone gave you some helping hands/minds/hearts/money throughout the years.....and I bet some were'nt even "yuppies"......they were probably like "my/the old folks" or whoever sheltered you, the more cruel instructors ...(who may have been actual an in- charge teacher that taught and wanted to get you a good education), the "old bag" down the street who contributed to some fund raising activitity of yours...the "crappy cooks" who did the best they could with what they had to work with to feed you, the crusty "old" crouchy and alone forgetful man down the street that worked hard at one time builing or financing the school you attended,
"holy than thou" people who took the time to pray for you...
Get the picture?
If you want to act like a yuppie...then "yup" that's what you will probably be called by some. Sometimes you will be called that by someone who has not walked in your shoes.
Do the best you can, smile, make your contribution to the world without being smug about it, give of yourself, be thoughtful, a gentleman, wise, and be thankful of the many things seen AND UNSEEN that put you in this position.
Even though I am not very liberal or liberal, I'd bet you look probably down right smart and handsome in a business suit.
Take care. Have a better day.

Nothing wrong with being successful but, when you call yourself a rarity you're probably hitting the nail on the head. You are so wrapped up in yourself that you are not only judging others you're surprised at their response. Chill out, others out there may not have been as successful as you but it doesn't make them lesser beings. They probably excel at other things like being able to relate to people. They probably have more good friends than you do too.

I haven't heard the term yuppie used for like 20 something years.
Why care what anyone else thinks or how they behave. Be you, proud and true, you deserve it, you worked for and earned it.
If you approve of yourself, you don't need the approval of everyone else. I am liberal based but these days my morals cause me to be considered conservative.

It's a good quality to have a knack for self-mockery. Though I am also succesful of sorts, I have never wished to dress like it - I've always dressed like myself. What I'd give you an unfriendly look for isn't envy, it's my loathing for conformity. Of course you could be a nice bloke, but don't be too afraid to show it :o)

The only problem people have with yuppies is they all into themselves the whole time

It's great to be successful and educated. Be proud of yourself and what you have accomplished. Hold your head up high & don't worry so much about what others think, or what you perceive they are thinking. Just be true to yourself.

I don't think of it as yuppy. I call it financially stable. Nothing wrong with that.
