250 Billion?!?!

Here's some thought provoking information.

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want the "politicians" spending your tax money or not.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases:

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate
our government is spending it.

Let's take a look at New Orleans with some simple division

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), asked Congress for
$250 BILLION to rebuild N.O.

Each of 484,674 residents of N.O. gets $516,528
Or, each of 188,251 homes gets $1,329,787
Or each family of 4 gets $2,066,012.

It seems to me that LA Sen Landrieu desires to have the Federal government (taxpayers) build her a NEW Louisianna instead of reclaiming, rebuilding what Louisianna lost due to Katrina. Since when is it the responsibility of the rest of the country to GIVE TO (not even give back) to Louisianna over and above what they themselves allowed Louisianna to lose?

The real question should be how/why/where can Senator Landrieu justify requesting the 250 billion dollars?

As for those in Washington and whether or not they actually approve of this request. It is possible that Congress approve her request and appropriate that amount. Even if this were to happen it doesn't mean she would actually get it. It simply means that the funds would be made available if need be. The problem with that is the majority of Congress would be influenced by the 28 Finance/Appropriations Committee members instead of thoroughly examing the request for themselves. Kinda like playing "follow the leader". Anyone with a brain knows how destructive that can be if the leader doesn't know how to lead. So do they have calculators? They would tell you that they don't need calculators, all they need is someone to tell them what to vote. I'd pass on supplying them calculators if I could supply them with common sense.

As for your question how much (money) do we give to New Orleans to blow? I say not one red cent. We go out of our way to supply the residents of New Orleans shelter, food and compensation to sustain them until they can reclaim their own lives (for a determined set of time). I am not in favor of improving
their lots in life if they are not willing to take the bull by the horns and improve it for themselves.

I felt as obliged as most Americans did to help immediately following Katrina until I saw how the majority of people behaved. All we heard about is how absolutely awful the conditions were in the temporary shelters immediately following the storm. You know what I saw, I saw thousands of people throwing trash anywhere and everywhere without even trying to maintain their shelters in some sense of order. We heard of fecal matter being smeared on walls. People relieving themselves wherever they felt like it.. For goodness sakes, they were in a flood! All you have to do is carry water to a toilet, pour it in and flush it for it to be ready to use again!! Over and over again we heard how the conditions were terrible. Where did we see people trying to take care of each other instead of sitting waiting for someone else to take responsibility for them?.Also, if the people of New Orleans were ignorant enough to re-elect the one man (their beloved mayor) to office that *I feel* is responsible for everything that went wrong in New Orleans post Katrina, I will not willingly support them in _anything_. How can you be in charge of a city like New Orleans knowing that one big blow could decimate the city and not plan for it? He ran! He literally ran from the city leaving the less fortunate to fend for themselves and then has the gall to blame everybody else for what happened. And they re-elected him... No, I don't feel sorry for them... not anymore.

Yes they are.
I have lived on the cost most of my life. The amount given to this hole in the ground is sickening. Other states were told to move there people and we have some times all of a town has been moved.

Just where was Louisiana Emergency Management dept.?
In 49 other states it would be up to them to Gide the feds in and tell the feds where to go and what help is needed. But not Louisiana.
