A:
Several people have problems with the dreaded "red X," so you are definitely not alone when you ask this question.
One of the main areas that people see the red X is in their e-mail. If you use Outlook Express and are having trouble seeing pictures in your e-mail, open it up and go to Tools, Options and choose the Security tab. Make sure the "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" box is unchecked. Now, if you are sending an e-mail and people have been complaining to you about the pictures not showing up, try this: open up OE and go to Tools, Options, Send tab. Under the "Mail Sending Format," make sure HTML is selected and then click on the HTML Settings button. In there, make sure the "Send pictures with messages" box is checked. That should solve your e-mail issues.

The red X can come for the following reasons:
1) The website has a bad link or the picture is missing (Nothing you can do)
2) Your browser is set to block images (Change the setting in your browser)...or right-click the red X and select SHOW PICTURE
3) You are browsing through a connection that uses picture blocking software (Maybe at work or school)

There's many reasons why your browser is displaying a red x for images on a site you're trying to view, I'll list a few.
1. The picture you're trying to display has been removed/deleted from its location/source. Meaning it's a bronken link.
2. The site where the picture is hotlinked from does not allow hotlinking.
3. Your computer is infected with spywares/viruses thus preventing your browser from displaying the images properly.
4. You have a 3rd party software installed or a plugin installed in your browser that prevents images from being downloaded.

The dreaded red x can mean different things. One of which is that your connection does not have the bandwidth or speed to handle the picture you are trying to get. It could be tied to a slow internet connection or even just a slow computer.
Upgrading is the only I know that helps.

It means that the link to the picture is broken. You're out of luck.
Try putting the image file into Google Images and see if you can check out a cached thumbnail.
