It can be dead easy if you've got a bit of cash. Try sharing a house - probably with Kiwi's or Aussies. If you've got hobbies - use those (There're heaps of camera clubs for example).

It can be all about the crowd you're in or what sort of person you are. If you ready for it; it can be a fantastic place.......

It can seem difficult to socialise with people in London when you first get there but once you get a job you find that people are well nice and easy to get along with. I lived there for 4 years and moved there by myself. I am a Kiwi and flatting with other people from the same country or region as yourself can make it easier as you are in the same boat and usually make a point to get to the social side of London life. Definitely do it though, London is one of the best cities in the world.

It is not an easy place to make friends because of:

1. It is very big so you wont run into people by chance
2. Many people commute to work there, therefore they are not around in the evenings.
3. It is mainly a place to work and for tourists.
4. It is expensive to go out.
5. The British are quite reserved at the best of times. And they are quite cliquey too.
6. Lots of people are only there for a short time or to work
or study with various companies or colleges.
7. The weather is rotten so you can´t just hang about outside and chat to people.

The best suggestion I can make is to join clubs and attend courses and not feel discouraged when people seem completely uninterested in who you are. And to live in a big friendly flatshare.

Good luck!

Yes we are an unfriendly lot...i myself have been brutally NO savagely honest with a couple to whom were obvious travellers...They asked if I had any spare change (the nerve they have), so I replied to these creatures "Do I have ATM stamped across my forehead? I didn't realise it was a requirement of your travel for you to starve the locals of their hard-earned money. You two can get back on your plane and go back to where ever the F*** you come from"
Was I too harsh, in this instance most certainly not...

And America being unpretentious is EXTREMELY questionable NO disputable NO an untruth

London is a city of foreigners. In fact I have met very few true born Londoners, everyone seems to be "from" somewhere. But still the city has managed to preserve its great culture, and now not you have people from everywhere but you have this grea mix of people who are also very polite, friendly and cultured. All in all, I dont think you will find it hard to socialize in London.

I have never been to London but I know two people from foreign countries and both of them found the city to be very anti-social and unfriendly. They then both came to Edinburgh and said the city was far friendlier.

Not if you are from London. I doubt that you are aware that for the most part the citizen of England don't like Americans. The Germans and French hate us. Hell all of Europe hates us.
