I am looking to plant some trees in my backyard, where my septic tank is, but not close to it. My backyard has a high water table and is usually moist but not soggy. I need some good fast growing shade trees that will not uproot my septic system. any ideas??

Here's a page of trees that are septic-compatible. I'd recommend Sweet Gum, the 'gumballs' are a little bit of a nuisance in the fall, but it's highly moisture tolerant and a beautiful tall shade tree.

The only one that I can think of would be of the Palm tree varities. The roots supposebly grow straight downwards, not out. But I would check with a Gardening expert or better still, the local councils.

I have been told that Bradford pear has a shallow root system. This is one reason they uproot easily during heavy windstorms.

They are fast becoming considered an invasive species, but they do fit your bill.

Most trees, in fact, have MOST of their roots in the top 12" of soil. You should find trees you like, then check their root depth with a horticulturist/arborist.

Go with apple, peach, Japanese persimmon ("Kaki"), plum or apricot; or, select from a list appropriate to your ( USDA ) planting zone. I'd avoid the pears, but stick with fruit. They won't extend ruthlessly beyond their drip line, and spring flowers give way to sweet summer treats.
