Scoped single shot pistols, such as the TC Contender and Encore and the Remington GP100, chambered for rifle cartridges are very accurate with sufficient "power" to humanely kill deer to 200+ yards. For close range (up to 50 yards), revolvers of .41 Magnum and up (specified as minimum in some states based on ft lbs energy at 100 yards) are fine. Some people use .357 Magnums where legal, but these are marginal as is the .45 ACP.

I wouldn't use a hand gun for hunting deer but if you must, use a 44 mag. Otherwise a 30-30 or 30 06 rifles are best. At least 100 yards because it's hard to get close to a deer in the wild.

really a handgun is not the most practical weapon for hunting.. A 308 rifle or 243 would be your best bet. If you were to use a handgun you would have to be no more than 25-40 yards away for your best shot. They can reach farther but your accuracy will be Way off. A 45 has better stopping power and a 9mm has better speed. But go with a rifle if at all posible

I have a buddy that uses a.357 mag. Not sure of the range though.

Although the S&W .460 is supposed to have a range of 200 yards and was designed for whitetail

Thompson-Center Contender...interchangeable barrels, scope mountable single shot. Mucho variety of calibers. If you're good, you could nail 'em out to 75 yards, maybe more.
