For most accurate results, wait 2 or 3 days after your period is due. Home pregnancy tests give you a positive result if they detect hcg, a hormone your body creates when it is pregnant, in your urine. Since, the home tests aren't sensitive enough to detect very tiny amounts of hcg, it is best to use first-morning urine and wait a couple of days after your period is due to avoid "false negatives." Also, don't read the test results after the time limit in the instructions.
Just in case you are pregnant (or if you are trying to conceive) be sure to start taking a daily prenatal vitamin with 800 mcg of folic acid, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs/medications. Folic acid can prevent major birth defects, as long as you take it preconception or very early in the pregnancy!
Good luck!

You don't always have to wait until a missed period to take a test. This is not the case for every woman. I tested positive at 10 days past ovulation. For me that was 5 days before my missed period.
Always remember that a woman must be producing enough HCG for a test to detect pregnancy. You can check out peeonastick.com for more information.
If you are late go ahead and take a test it couldn't hurt. Chances are she is probably pregnant! If you haven't gotten your period in a week and still get a negative result consult your doctor at once!

I always wait until the 35th day of my cycle. My cycle usually lasts 32-35 days, so it's not like I waited until I was a week late. Some tests can tell you if you are pregnant up to a week before your missed period. Read the instructions on your test, it should tell you the earliest it can detect pregnancy hormones.

If you wait even a short amount of time after your cycle was supposed to come - even 1 or 2 days, the tests today are over 99% accurate.

First response is the most sensitive home pregnancy test.
See: http://www.peeonastick.com
You can take it even before you miss your period, and it tends to be very accurate from the first day of your missed period. Make sure you use the first urine of the morning, as it will have the highest concentration of hcg and will show pregnancy the earliest. Good Luck!
