the stars on the american flag represent the 50 states that make up the USA today, the thirteen stripes represent the thirteen colonies that banded together to form the USA on July 4th ____ (whatever the year was)

I think the stars in the blue field of the american flag means the many united states of america in the current union and the stripes also means the original states in the union during the revolutionary war back in the 1770's or so.

The stripes are there because the original flag was made from some deck-chair fabric, as it was all that the Founding Fathers had to hand.

the 50 stars are the 50 states. The 13 stripes represent the 13 original states. Originally, the colors had no signifigance.
