There are many social programs that the government conducts to promote economic security for individuals which involve subsidized housing, welfare, social security, disability compensation and work relief. These programs were created under the precedent set by President F. D. Roosevelt and his 'New Deal' programs: innovative programs developed to help lessen the sting of the Great Depression for individuals. However, as we see in history, promoting the economic security of individuals has its pitfalls. When a nation spends its resources on promoting the economic security of individuals, the economic security of the nation as a whole is compromised. It is because of this that the New Deal did NOT bring America out of the Depression (in fact, during the great depression, we experienced ANOTHER economic recession). It is because of these very programs that our national debt is so outragous.
It is not the role of the government to promote the economic security of individuals. There are simply too many individuals whose economic security needs to be promoted! How can a government, especially in a free market system, micro-manage the finances of its individual citizens? It cannot be done. Rather, it is the role of the individual to promote his own economic security and the role of the state to promote the security of the body as a whole.

Here is a better question: What are the individuals doing for themselves to promote economic security?
Enough with the dependency on governement!
In the words of John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but you can do for your country" (and for yourself).
