I can't tell you a lot, but have recently been north of bretignolles in an area near to Saint Jean de Monts... we stopped quickly at Bretignolles one day to check out the beach, which was nice, partly sandy with some rocks. Some places I would recommend are Saint Gilles and the zoo in Sables D'olonnes, its not a huge zoo, but it is really nice and has some really cool animals. If you are prepared to travel north for a bit, would also recommend a day out on the island of Noirmoutier. The Vendee is basically a very nice area with some amazing beaches, and you have probably chosen a good time to go now that the schools are going back as it means a lot of traffic earlier in the season.
