What are some of the causes which brought about the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century?

Hi Caitlin,

really, a lot was happening at this time but one of the main reasons behind the change was the perceived corruption of the Catholic Church. For instance, the church was just beginning the idea of Purgatory (the place between heaven and hell). It also sold indulgences to help people get into purgatory instead of going to hell. People like Martin Luther (the father of the Protestant reformation) couldn't standy by while this happened. In their eyes it was horrible. The church was becoming too powerful and too corrupt. They set out to change things.

The power of the catholic church.The desire for King Henry VIII,
of England to divorce his then wife,the widow of his older brother,
Katherine of Aragon.And the desire to help himself to the obcenely huge coffers of the church.
