First of all, they need to know if you are eligible for employment. Without a SSN, you are not eligible for employment. Secondly, they need to withhold or make payments to social security, medicare, unemployment, federal, and state taxes and pay them to the respective authorities. In order for you to get credited properly, they need your unique SSN. Otherwise, someone else with the same name may get credit for your contributions. Only a SSN is unique enough for everyone to get the proper credits.

Employers pay you under your Social Security number and report your earnings to the IRS. Those figures are matched against your tax return.
