NOX is produced by the high temperatures in the cylinders during combustion. to reduce NOX; engines were slightly retarded in timing as well as having some exhaust gas introduced into the intake manifold. The latter is the function of the EGR valve. All of which is now controlled by your onboard computer or PCM (powder train control module)

N0x is the lean running of an engine is causing to much heat in the combustion process. The other gasses are just as important for a Auto tech like me to tell you what I would do beside getting the EGR system working properly and enrichen the fuel mixture

Get its engine tuned every six months and use unleaded fuel.
