Since they have no real interest whatsoever to buy a house, why do they waste people's time? Why do they find it exciting to go to people's houses for no reason whatsoever? Are they that bored? Why are neighbors so incredibly nosy that they go to "open houses"?

Because of this, I have realized "open houses" are an incredible waste of time for a seller.

I see a lot of negativity in these answers, so let me offer a little balance here. They might go to get some ideas about furniture and decorating. Or they might have a friend who is looking to buy a house, and they would be in a position to tell that friend what they saw, and how much it cost. Or they might be contemplating selling their house in a year or two, and they want to see what makes a favorable or unfavorable impression on visitors, so they can plan their sale accordingly. Or they might want to meet the Realtor.

They are an incredible waste of time, the percentage of houses that get sold from open houses is very low. I think people are just nosy.

Do not let those looky-loos get to you. I think open houses really work to advertise your house for sell. Even if they are not looking to buy. They may no someone who are. Besides there are now a large selection of homes to choose from and you need as much attention brought to your home as you can possibly get.

No they're not. There are other things that are better, but there are two reasons agents do them. 1) They do pull in some interested buyers, either immediately or through acquaintances. Don't be too quick to judge the lookers! 2) They pull in potential buyer clients. This is why most agents really do them.

If you want an open house to be successful for your purposes, vanish for the duration. I don't hold the opens for my own property.

While some are nosy, some go to see how much their neighbors are selling for to get an idea of how much their own house is worth.

the same reason people call up when you're selling your car in the driveway and say "how much" and then when you tell them (and by the way, it's on the sign), they say "that's too much money".
LOSERRRRSSSSSS!

I would never EVER go to my neighbor's open house or anyone's for that matter, unless I was truly interested in purchasing their home!

Sometimes nieghbors go to open houses becuase they are trying to get a feel for how much their own house is worth. They compare amenities and things like that.
