Because the yanks cannot think for themselves. They saw that the Brits played a game with an oval shaped ball so they took it up too. But instead of calling it by its proper name of RUGBY they decided in their stupitity to call it be the other game the Brits played of FOOTBALL. THEN they decide to refer to the REAL football as Soccer.

What the heck is socar? And if this "socar" as you is the real football, then why do people in Canada (Canadian football), Australia (Aussie rules football), the US (American football), and South Africa and Ireland (rugby football), to name a few, call different sports football? It's the just the way it is, they all developed from the same code over a century ago.

They call it football because the other football is so blasted boring. So instead of wasting a great word the gave it a kick(pardon the pun). American football is awesome and only growing. Soccer on the other hand is boring and overdone. How many players have gone from being soccer players to come and kick in the nfl. At least 3 I can think of. How nfl go to play soccer. None it is to boring their own players are leaving.

Football is the name given to a number of different, but related, team sports. The most popular of these worldwide (and, in fact, the most popular sport worldwide) is association football, which can be abbreviated soccer. The English language word football is also applied to rugby football (rugby union and rugby league), North American football (American and Canadian), Australian rules football, and Gaelic football

While it is widely believed that the word football originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, there is a rival explanation, which has it that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot

Yes futbol (soccer for the Yanks) is the real football. But in American Football, the ball is actually kicked at various points in the game, kickoff after a score and when punting.

they can call it whatever they want. The Beautiful Game will never be outmatched by it's American pretender... =)

We are the worlds only superpower, we can call it whatever we want! We would change the name of soccer but nobody would care so why bother.

It was once "Football". Drop kicks were used often. The forward pass did not exist at one time. It evolved.
