Well first you need to assure him that just because he is in sped that doesn't mean he isn't normal. Once he knows this to the core of his heart he won't be so worried about riding the short bus. Also tell him that there will be other kids with the same problem as he has on the bus. So he will have a chance to make some friends right away. This should be good for him. And he will have an opportunity to make some new friends from different schools. If he ever got picked on, make sure and point out he wont be on the little bus.
If you make sure and tell him all this there is no reason he wont be excited about school!!

Hey, the bus drivers are much more attentive to the kids on these minibuses for the special needs students -- and yes, they do enjoy the rides -- just get him something favorite to hold or touch in his backpack and make sure he is completely packed, lunch ready, and waiting at least 5 minutes before pickup time. These are some of the most experienced and safest drivers for school buses, so they are in very good care. And an added bonus -- most of the special needs buses have seat belts -- so it is pretty much like he will be in the car with you.

Hi, my pet rock, Peter, has also been assigned to this same bus. I wonder if our two will be in the same class. Probably not. I am almost one hundred percent positive that Peter will be spending most of his time in the classroom as he tends to take extremely long periods of time to understand even the most basic things. But please tell your son that Peter will be on his bus and will be saving a seat for him. How can anybody not be excited knowing that they have a Peter to play with?

If you are serious, stop calling it the short bus...believe me he probably knows what it means and that it's a slam...treat him with more respect. My nephew was a special ed student and knew all the references to "the short bus" were mean comments...it hurt him more than he could express. So clean up YOUR attitude and maybe he won't have such a problem with it. Buy him a new backpack and make him first day of school special..he's going to get a lot of crap at school, he doesn't need it from his parents.

If he is a SPED he won't realize the difference between a short bus and a long bus.

I just hope that you never have a child that has a disability. If you do someday, remember this. Karma will get you one way or another. You have to be a preteen because even my 12 year old cousin is mature enough not to make fun of special education students. Grow up, loser.

must run in the family...so whatever your parents told you to make you feel better about riding the short bus would work for him. Maybe he can wear your special helmet, it would help ease the separation anxiety
