Check that the recycle bin is empty if not empty it run defrag then scan disk tick both boxs shut down reboot let scan disk run this should help you then need to back up the files fro your computer to a rewriable formatted cd/dvd disk which has been formatted you can then delete the hard drive ones this will give you more disk space as your drive as it is now is at 10% as set by windows
to defrag click on my computer right click on the drive properties bottom of menu tools the same for scandisk after defrag I would also consider a new higher capacity drive

Normally, if a hard drive fails, it needs to be replaced with a working one. Hard drives are encased and cannot be opened for repairs. Before you throw it out, try to reformat your hard drive. To do this, you need the the operating system software, which in most cases is Windows. If it reformats OK, then you can still use that hard drive. Be aware, however, that formatting the hard drive will erase all information on that disk. Good luck.

It really sounds like your hard drive is knackered. However, one last thing you could try is to get hold of a Windows 95 or Windows 98 boot disk. These would contain the command scandisk.exe which is not available in Windows XP.
Boot from the floppy disk and type scandisk c: at the prompt when it becomes available. This attempts to recover damaged clusters on your hard drive.
Having said that, it still sounds like it's time to replace your present hard drive.

It is not worth repairing it. It is eventually going to go. Mast hard disks last 5 years (Mine has lasted 7)
Back up all valuable data, then either try formatting it to see if that helps or replace it.
Also, make sure that the hard disk is disposed of properly, not just left at the local tip.

You will probably need a set of special (security) bits for your screwdriver to enable you to undo the casing. There is nothing you can do to fix the HDD but the two crescent shaped magnets (which drive the head arms) are well worth removing. I remember, as a kid, picking up paper clips with a magnet - well, with these magnets you can pick up boxes of paper clips. They are something else !!. Now go out and buy a new HDD.

Buy a new hard drive. By the way, if the hard drive or your computer is still under warranty, take it to an authorize dealer and have them fix it. If they can't fix the problem, they might give you new one. Good luck.
