Officially, it was Argentine pride. They supposedly had a claim to the islands, while long-established precedent made England the rightful owners.

Actually, it was oil. Beneath the seabed within the territorial waters of the Falkland Islands is an awful lot of oil. The country that controls that area earns the royalties from the oil companies that develop those potential oil fields. As I recall, there were some sharing concessions whereby Argentina gets a piece of the pie, if ever someone gets around to baking it.
