If there are so many wonderful ideas out there on how to improve today's society and majority of people understand this and believe it, why then is it sometimes like pulling teeth to get people to the right thing? This is not even religion based question, it mainly has to do with the lack of compassion and understanding of humanity. Why does the phrase "every man for himself" even exists?

my own personal opinion, is because of the "status quo" so many people in all different parts of the world are doing fine with the way things are, it just SO happens that many of those people are the ones in power or have the monetary wealth they desire.
for them it's like the saying goes " if it ain't broke don't fix it!!!"
it's a shame. and it maybe as the writers of fantasy and science fiction have been writing about for years, it will probably take a global catastrophe for it too ever change, too bad nobody pays any attention to the writer's .

Many people, like you, believe that change requires large scale efforts. However, change comes in manageable steps. If I give of my time to a favorite cause, I have made the world a better place for someone. We must do what is manageable for our own personal circumstances.

Because you have to deal with people.
Did you ever wonder why the Army would pick a slogan of," an Army of one?" What ever happened to, one for all and all for one?

Because it is people's innate reaction to look out for themselves. Self preservation is and will always be #1.
