The Rosetta Stone was found in Egypt in 1799 . On it was the same inscription in three kinds of writing - ancient Egyptian picture - writing called hieroglyphic , demotic [ a simpler form of Egyptian writing ] and Greek . It gave scholars the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs .

In my humble opinion the most valuable artifact hasn't been found yet. And that is the casket of Alexander the Great.

The tomb of Philip of Macedonia -Alexander the great's father- in Vergina-Macedonia ,Greece.
Philip's skeleton was found.
A reconstruction of the face was possible based on the scull.And we have DNA.

I agree the Rosetta stone opened our understanding to thousands of years of civilization that we thought was dead. It helped us decipher the hieroglyphics in Egypt

it would have to have been discovered then?????spirlongo grotto in north africa-a votive cave at sea level filled with "priceless sculpture from the roman period!!...a lost van gogh and several other minor works recovered from a nazi family- the original owners were a german jewish family...it is still in litigation!!the treasure trove of the obersalzburg caves- row upon row of pits on a grid...each one filled with counterfeit currencies of all nations,jewels,gold teeth,watches;platinum,gold and silver ingots;crown jewels and sacred relics,strategic metals and other horded nazi loot!!.....there are many more that are known of;but no one is actually looking for them....e.i. "the golden chain of the incas..the largest golden object ever made by man 857 yards long with links so large a man could stick his hand through the joined links...it was lost during pizarro's conquest of peru!!!the last man to see it was desto the conquistador who later died from an indian arrow in a later expedition near the mississippi river in north america!!!and the treasure of alaric the visigoth who sacked rome..it's riches covered him and his standing horse along with carpets and tapestries,gold ,silver,urns,crowns,candalabra and other treasures and a river was turned over the grave...in the busento river near cosento,italy in calabria!!no one's ever found the spot!!!an almiranta galleon was lost with 235 chests of emeralds in addition to gold and silver bullion,coins and objects of indian craftsmanship on a reef near the bahamas!!i know alot of such treasures...it's my thing!!!
