i think probably in small circles it might work - but - globally, in real life could the boy's theory of paying it forward really work?

Yes, in an ideal world where everybody cared about someone else beside themselves, it would work. This movie's great message is that everyone deserves a good deed no matter what side of the law they are on. If everyone thought the way the kid in the movie did, the world would a safer, cleaner, more prosperous place.

If you haven't seen it already, you should see the movie Crash. This movie has an equally powerful message.

I doubt it could work globally. I think to many people do nice things to others and expect something in return.

The book was quite a bit different than the movie, in the book he made more of an impact and the idea of it working globally was more of a possibility.

I think it would also depend on the person who was trying to get the message across, I have a group of friends who got me to read the book and they're very happy, social and friendly people who are well known in the community. It would be harder for someone to get the message across if they're not very social and ready to make something of themselves and or take risks on people.

Why not? We do it everytime we respond to a "question" on Yahoo answers. We pass on a favor and essentially receive nothing in return.

See, I've just paid it forward
:-)

Yes, if you look at the mathematics of it it grows exponentially and could actually affect the whole planet. But then again, I'm an optimist.

Yes because the idea is to do a good deed just for the sake of doing it. Not to get anything back.

i doubt it. there are a lot of people in this world who are skeptical about things like that and they probably would not follow throu with it. I think for it to be really effective EVERYONE would have to participate, which is practically impossible.
