We stayed at the Author's Bed and Breakfast. It's off the main strip, but still close to everything. It was relatively inexpensive (I think we paid $80 per night).

If it's great, it ain't inexpensive. There is no such thing as inexpensive lodging in Key West. You may try staying in one of the other Keys and then driving in to Key West. Try Islamorada.

Save money be staying in the Lower Keys, rather than in KW itself.
