Laid off constitutes that the company was losing money and could not afford to continue to pay you.
Getting fired normally means that you were let go for "cause." In other words you did something negligent, were incompetent, or did something bad enough to constitute being fired

If you get fired, your employment is terminated. People usually get fired for doing substandard work, not obeying company rules and/or policies, insubordination to the boss, etc. BOTTOM LINE: You're gone and they don't want you back. If you get laid off, it's usually because the company has fallen on hard times and doesn't need to produce as much (think of the auto industry) so you don't go to work but you haven't technically lost your job. If the company starts doing better, they have to bring you back on before they go out and hire other workers.

When you're fired you're dismissed for good, but if you get laid off, there is a possibility of returning back to the same job.

Getting "fired" means losing one's job as punishment for doing something wrong, slacking off, etc. Being "laid off" means losing one's job for situations beyond one's control, like an economic downturn in the company's finances.

Fired: Management felt that either your job performance was not sufficient; you violate company policy; you engaged in inappropriate behavior in the workplace.
Laid off: Your position was eliminated either temporarily or permanently. This is not a reflection on your job performance. Or, your company is restructuring and has replaced your position with a new one, requiring a skill set that you do not have.

Adding to what was already said, laid off usually implies that the company may cally you back to work, should the current hardships of the company end.

If you are fired it means you did a lousy job and can't collect unemployment. If you are laid off your company is basically down sizing and you are eligible for unemployment.

Basically, the company just wants to sound more professional so they say "laid off". It means the same thing.

"Getting fired" is a more harsh term and usually means that the employer does not regret doing it. If you get fired, it is usually your own fault.
"Laid off" is more appropriate to use in references although it actually means that you lost your job because of changes in the company's structure, usually because of financial constraints or streamlining.
