IN general a copyright can be obtained simply by putting the c on the work and having proof of the date you came up with it.

Either have your notes notarized (and thus dated) by a notary or place the original notes in an envelope, seal it and mail it to your self. Don't open it when you receive it. The envelope will have a postmark by the goverment.

The best way is the notary.
