Pirates have brutally tortured and murdered millions of innocent people over many years.

Not magic, it's a creative forgetfulness. Like people wax on about _Angela's Ashes_ being soooo inspiring when it's a romanticization of poverty. The swords and ships pirates haven't been a factor for a long time, so they carry no fear. Instead they've come to represent danger and adventure and being in control of one's own life, all factors which we need more of (cf Fight Club).
To be fair, this isn't anything new. Back in their day, middle-class folks stuck in their lovely middle-class inland homes found pirates romantic too. Sailors probably disagreed.
It's absolutely terrifying to think that the same thing might happen to the Nazis in a few generations. This is why the Jewish people say "Never forget."

What? You don't understand the concept that "bad is good?" You don't understand the idea that breaking rules is fun?
Lets make this more simpler- when you were a child, did you ever steal a cookie and then laughed when you successfully got away with it? or something similar?
