if so how much trouble can i get in? i have downloaded about 500 copyrighted songs from limewire and i really dont want to stop!

yes you can do and many have. generally they only target people are know to trade heavily but you can't rely on this. best thing to protect yourself is not share once you have them downloaded but then this defeats the purpose of illegal peer to peer sharing if everyone were to do that.

Fines of thousands of dollars/pounds are not unknown.

No you can't get into trouble for it they will just send you a bill for about £26,000.00.
That's what happened to one kid in the UK, he had been downloading songs from a site and they traced him, he was on his moms computer and they got a bill for £26,000.00 pounds(twenty six thousand pounds sterling).

Limewire is NOT illegal. You are not buying the songs, but SHARING them. That is the whole idea of the site. Don't worry, download away!!!!

Of course you can get in trouble for doing something illegal. Its called illegal for a reason. Next you'll be asking if you should drink something when you're thirsty or eat when hungry.

yes. they can sue you for all kinds of money. it was in the paper for my area a few months ago about a women having to pay back thousands of dollars for downloading from kazza.
