The swelling shouldn't be permanent I don't think although if left completely untreated/iced it would have likely become permanent. I think you're safe for now as long as you follow the rest of the doctor's orders and don't mess them up anymore. I hope you used the gauze for those first hours when he told you to and make sure you follow up with everything he/she says from this point on.

The swelling will not be permanent, it just takes a few days for it to disappear. It's normal to have swelling and pain for a few days after having a wisdom tooth removed.

I didn't ice at all after my wisdom tooth was pulled out last year and it was ok, the swelling and pain disappeared after a few days.

the swelling wont be permanent, calm down.Take a deep breath, its OK not icing it will cause increased swelling, increased discomfort, and increased healing time but it will not be permanent. for a quick and comfy healing i recommend following your doctors instructions, i just had mine out too. I iced all the time and my swelling was almost gone in two days.so relax take it easy, and eat lots of soft serve ice cream!
If you do rinse with salt water don't spit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it may break the blood clot due to the pressure, let the water dribble out of your mouth, i know its gross but you have too!!!!! also dont use a straw for at least 6 days, same reason.

The swelling will go away - it took a week for mine to subside - and that was just to subside - not even go completely away. It was a major trauma to the area, it'll take some time. Just do what the dr said - you'll be fine. The ice usually just helps it go down quicker or just numbs it for you -not sure which. I didn't ice mine at all and i'm fine.

the swelling will not become permanant. the ice will just help with the pain. you should rinse with salt water. That will help guard against infection. good luck.
