This item (spelled "Meter" in the USA or or "Metre" in Canada) is a long, flat piece of wood, plastic or metal (roughly one metre in length) with printed graduations marked with 0.5cm along one side and 1 cm incraments on the other.

A metre is a measurement of distance approximately equal to 3.28 feet.
