i haven't been playing bass guitar for very long and i want to learn how to read bass tabs and all kind of other stuff about the bass. any sites to help further my knowledge on the bass would be great.

Generally speaking, you only play on the thickest two strings unless you start getting advanced and want to do some Les Claypool/Flea/Jane's Addicition type stuff.

The number is the amount of frets from the nut. 9 times out of 10 it's only going to be on the bottom strings since those are the only strings that are actually lower than a guitar. (Yes, I know the low note ona guitar is E, but these days lots of people tune Eb, or straight out Dropped D anyway).

That's really all you need to know. Follow the numbers and play along with the song to get the rhythm. Type the song name, or band name into Yahoo or Google along with the word "tab" and that's about all you need to know. After you've done it a few times, you'll be able to do it in your sleep. I recommend really simple songs such as the Cure or Nirvana before attempting more difficult stuff like Rancid or Green Day. Not that it's hard to play, but it's a heck of a lot more complex, walking basslines and such.
