Greenwich, England has been the home of Greenwich Mean Time GMT since 1884. GMT is sometimes called Greenwich Meridian Time because it is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Greenwich is the place from where all time zones are measured.

Just to confuse things a little. Just because the time is 8pm GMT doesn't mean that this is the time in Greenwich in London on a standard clock at the minute. As we are in British Summer Time at the minute the clocks were put forward an hour in March in order to maximise the daylight hours during the time when people are wakened ie it gets darkers an hour later than if the clock hadn't been moved forward. During the period after the end of October when the clocks are moved back again until the end March when BST begins then GMT and Grenwich time will be the same.
