Here is a link to a site which contains a picture of an ancient Roman litter.

http://www.hadrians.com/rome/romans/sources/roman_transport.html

As you can see, it was carried by slaves and had rods on which curtains hung which could be closed for privacy. More women than men used such things in the city.

Chariots were quite popular in Rome as well... in fact, there were so many horses and chariots that Caesar almost forbade their use during night hours so the clatter of hooves on the roads wouldn't keep everyone awake!

Rome also had a sort of taxi service. A carriage was connected by gears to a device that dropped balls into a container as the gears moved. Patrons could then be billed based on the distance travelled. But this kind of thing was more for the middle class... nobles usually had plenty of slaves (especially in the late empire - it was estimated that 40% of the population of Rome was slaves!) so there was no need to pay some merchant.

Keep in mind that Rome probably had about a million people living in it, so probably just about any conveyance possible was in use by SOMEONE! Hope that helps!

Ancient noblewomen verny seldomly travel through the city of Rome. In fact in ancient time women were very much restricted in the many day to day activities they could do in all levels of societies. Whenever they were allowed to travel they were always accompanied by heavy guards and soldiers for their security.

Highborn Roman ladies traveled in sedan chairs carried by slaves trained for the specific task. Usually, they were accompanied by a favorite servant, and/or several household guards. The ladies feet were not supposed to touch uncovered ground, nor were her garments. B.
