Because the US and the USSR were locked in a 40 years long arms race. The US literally outspent the USSR (on arms and defense) and this indirectly forced the collapse of the Soviet economy. Once things got tough enough economically , the populace facilitated the end of the Soviet confederation. All the satellite states (former soveriegn nations themselves...) disbanded the USSR.

Marxism as a government did not allow the randomness of human relationships. In theory this philosophy sounded Utopian, but in its application it never overcame the instinctive class system of human relations, or the need for spirituality.
Further, when the Catholic Church appointed a Pope from Poland the communist TOTALLY lost all control over the people. They could not prevent him from coming home and giving the Polish people the confidence to rebel against them, because the whole world was involved in his mission to his homeland.
The wall cracked, began to crumble, then simply collapse worldwide. Bankrupt ideas that were defeated without a shot fired from a weapon. Only a man of prayer and courage.

Afghanistan was the ruination of the Soviet political structure and economy much more than any other influence. Without it, the cold war would still be with us, Star Wars or no. It’s questionable how much longer the U.S. could have lasted if we’d gone ahead gobbling up enormous debt. Back then, Red China would have been unable to bail us out, as they are now.

Most people will tell you its because of Communism. Communism itself is not what made the country collapse. It was due to corrupt leaders and bad management. It was an economic failure.
