I don't know about getting an invite? But you can write to the Office of the First Lady a year in advance to get a birthday greeting card on your birthday signed by both the President and the First Lady.

You have to talk to you state senator about 6 months or more before you go and you have to be approved. The gov only allows so many people from each state in. They will take your info and do a backgroud check on you. It sucks i know. I was just there and that is how i found out. good luck

Call the white house directly and tell them that you are calling to RSVP for dinner next Thursday with the White House press secretary. When they tell you that they don't know anything about it just say, "Oh, that's no problem. I am sure that you can find me another date.
So while they are scrambling to figure out who you are because you sound like a VIP with expectations and someone that they cannot afford to piss off you can be very accomodating.
