Well, there is no remedy as in "cure" for diabetes as of yet.
However, let me describe the difference as there are different treatments for the two different kinds.
Type 1 is also known as juvenile onset diabetes or insulin dependant diabetes. The onset as the name suggests is usually in your young ages (usually before 20). The treatment for it is insulin injections. Of course, diet is treatment too...but with type one, you need the insulin as your body is not producing the insulin it needs for the transport of glucose into the cell.
With type one diabetes, people can go into what is known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis...this happens when the body doesn't have the insulin it needs to transport the sugar into the cell and therefore starts to break down fat inthe body for fuel (that's where the ketones come from).
Type 2 diabetes is aka Adult onset diabetes...or NON insulin dependent (which is now not necessarily true as people with type 2 may have to go on insulin anyways later on in the disease progression). Usually, people with type two go thru three stages of treatment: diet controlled, medication controlled and then finally, insulin controlled.
With type two there is what is known as INSULIN RESISTANCE. So your body produces enough insulin, only the body can't use it for some reason. For pregnant women it is due to the placental hormones (some women in pregnancy need the insulin ontop of diet control)....for over weight people, it's usually due to the excess fat on their bodies (for some reason this also causes insulin resistance)...for others it may just be a familial tendency.
Some of the drugs used for type 2 are Metformin, and Gluconorm...there are others as well, but you can do the search for them on the internet...try www.diabetes.ca
As far as exercise goes, it is reccommended to increase your activity (under the doctor's orders of course), as the exercise will help to lower your blood glucose levels.
Hope that helps if not, go to www.diabetes.ca and do the searches as they're specialists in the disease.

P.S. if, however, you are NOT yet diabetic and have been told of having some insulin resistance, I have heard of taking Chromium for that...don't use it unless you're under the supervision of a doctor who tells you to use it or a nutritionist or a naturopath. Apparently it does work to help to STABILIZE the sugar levels (as long as you're eating properly that is)

Go to herbalhealer.com and get the following:
1. HHA's 4-herb tea (helps you to become insulin free)
2. Diabend (nourishes your pancreas for Type 2)
3. Colloidal Minerals (a staple for anyone that has diabetes)
Exercise and I would recommend a full body detox once or twice a year to remove all the toxins from your body.

the best practice for any diabetic is to follow the doctors advice, eat right by avoiding lots of carbohydrates at any one meal and limiting sugary foods.
Diabetes education classes are also readily available and many are free or low cost.
exercise helps keep blood sugars under control as does avoiding alcohol.
type I diabetics lack the ability to produce insulin and have to take daily shots to replace it.
type 2 diabetics will either produce not enough insulin in the body or too much.
medication is usually prescribed and sometimes insulin as well.
Your doctor is your best resource but for more information here are some good sites
