I noticed that when a group of people get together, they will say not to talk about politics or religion. I don't get that. Why do we get all out of whack over that stuff?

Religion is very personal and for many it is the basis on how we live our lives. The last thing anyone wants to debate is their belief systems. I have a hard time with people trying to convert me to their religion because they are concerned about me going to hell. I tell them to mend their own fences and mind their own business. Religion like politics is very volatile and people are very opinionated. If I am in a group of people who think that George Bush is the greatest president ever in the history of the US, you can imagine the "discussion" that such a view could cause! Politics and religion discussions usually end up with I am right and you are wrong. This is not exactly the kind of interaction you want to have with anyone.

Because sadly too many people believe their religion is the only one that matters. Look at evangelical christians, they go so far as to tell you to your face your going to hell because you don't believe in their version of God. It's like that with most religions. For something that is meant to bring peace in the world, it seems all it does is create war.

Some people consider it vitally important in their life. Others couldn't give a fig about it. Some fanatics think it is their duty to convert others, or get upset if other fanatics tell them they're wrong. It's a lot like sports fans that support rival teams, now that you think about it.
