Partly because almost every crazy abuse scene you see him in the woman is always Maurene O'Hara. Things were like that in the 1800s,but those scenes were made to be funny. Maurene O'Hara and John Wayne were the closest of friends. If you watch other movies by her you will see a pattern of the woman being handled roughly,even in the Disney movie "parent trap". She was the Firey Red head everyone loved. In every case she would yell at the man or pester him till he went a little crazy.

john wayne is an acting legend and they are only films and he was following a script.
back then the women were supposed to show there men respect and if they didnt then they would be mistreated.
remember the majority of the films he did were westerns and he was always a gentlemen to the women in these films

Same reason those films showed Indians as "bad guys", or subservient. It was portrayed and "allowed" in those eras. Remember those was no women's lib or Gloria Steinem!
