I'm a middle-aged guy who works in IT. We tend to take our jobs seriously because when something goes wrong, it affects a lot of people, and can cost lots of money to correct the mistake.
As an example: suppose I'm working on the company payroll, and make a mistake calculating income tax. If the program takes out too much, we have to either refund it, or take out less in the next payroll cycle. But what if someone didn't get a check this month - we have to allow for that next time. What if only some people got too much withheld? And the list of "what ifs" can go on and on.
Now - you figure out what other things can go wrong if I'm working on accounts receivable or payable, the inventory, or any of a dozen other systems.
But you're right on one point - some of the IT guys are just jerks.

You're exactly right. It Bizz is a fast pace and it constantly changes. You have to constanlty try to be on top of things, because if you don't keep up you can get left bhhind. That's how it is, and will always be like that anywhere you go. I'm not an IT person though. Electricians take their time, and they are the best paid worker compare to any job without a master or Ph D degrees.

The Baby Boomers are just following what they have seen and believe to be effective. Some are nerds, want approval, and some are jerks. Some are nice guys.

I think a bit of each. They have a technical skill which they can use to feel important. The want to be in a position of power - control of network access. And yes, they are big nerds too and that may explain why they are now in search of power and approval.

Pretty much all of the above, with a lot of arrogant self-importance thrown in for good measure.
Some of us middle-aged men prefer the quiet of a machine shop floor, with it's oil and flying metal chips. So much more peaceful!
