My sister used to hit hers hard with a book or hammer and break them up (ouch!) and they always came back. I would like to avoid this treatment. I've lost a bunch of wieght, but these lumps seem to be appearing everywhere.

Ganglion cysts are NOT solidified fatty deposits. They are a collection of synovial fluid (the fluid found in joints that acts as lubrication for the joint). But in ganglion cysts the fluid collects outside the joint in little pockets that surround your tendons. When the grow, they press on surrounding tissue and cause discomfort/pain. They will grow in size, but won't "spread" to other parts of your body. So if they're popping up in other places, they probably aren't ganglion cysts.

Hitting them actually just bursts open the pocket and the fluid temporarily drains out. This may or may not be a permanent "fix". But the fluid can start collecting again and you'll form the cyst over and over again.

Getting them drained by a doctor is another way to treat them, but again, this is only effective about 50% of the time and they come back. The only way to insure they won't come back is to have it surgically removed.

The type of growth that is caused by a fatty deposit is called a lipoma. It's a whole different animal. They are benign (non-cancerous) and can be removed (if they're not too big) in a doctor's office if they are trained to do so.

I suggest visiting your doctor for an evaluation of what these "cysts" really are. Don't try home treatments until you know what you're dealing with.

They may not be ganglion cyst, please don't try to treat them your self.I searched it on the internet just to be sure and you will see my findings below. The fact that you have lost alot of weight and now have bumps forming ...well let your doctor check it out just to make sure it's not something a bit more serious then a ganglion cyst.
Good luck....

A ganglion cyst is a tumor or swelling on top of a joint or the covering of a tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). It looks like a sac of liquid (cyst). Inside the cyst is a thick, sticky, clear, colorless, jellylike material. Depending on the size, cysts may feel firm or spongy.
The cause of ganglion cysts is not known. One theory suggests that trauma causes the tissue of the joint to break down forming small cysts, which then join into a larger, more obvious mass. The most likely theory involves a flaw in the joint capsule or tendon sheath that allows the joint tissue to bulge out.
In the past, home care has included topical plaster, heat, and various poultices. It even extended to use of a heavy book to physically smash the cyst (sometimes this is called “Bible therapy”). These forms of treatment are no longer suggested, however, because they have not been shown to keep the ganglion cysts from returning and could, in fact, cause further injury.

I too suffer with those painful cysts. It is my understanding, that no matter what is done to them, including removing them surgically, they will always return. I will say that as I have grown older, they seem to take longer to grow back. Good luck with that.

I would bang it hard and it would go away only to come back worse than before...I had to have surgery to have it removed. that was 2 years ago and it hasnt come back yet....according to the doctor, they have roots and the roots have to be removed or it will keep coming back....
