Hi all....I have an 8yr old fiat Punto - 45000 miles. Was coming home tonight and found that I had a prob with my accelerator or gears. I get this really bad chugging noise.....also have a burning smell......any ideas????
I will be taking it in to the garage tomorrow!

Clutch is a gonner.

if you can rev - but nothing happens (or you only accelerate slowly) you've burnt out / worn out the clutch.

Driven well, a clutch can last over 100,000 miles. Unfortunately, a lot of driver 'ride' the clutch at junctions & on hills, or are a little too slow when changing gears - all that results in extra wear.

Expect a bill for £60 - £160 parts & £100 to £200 labour.

I have the same car as you and had a similar problem. With the burning smell my heater matrix (rad) needing replacing. With the chugging we've tried everything, new plugs, leads etc. Left it into 2 garages who didn't know what it was. One of them wanted 600 quid just to look at it!
My hubby changed the throttle body while he was doing the matrix and I also got a new clutch now it runs so much better.

OK i think you def should listen to this. on my way to work this morning i saw a fiat punto surrounded with fire engines the car was ablaze ant the poor driver was treated for smOKe inhalation. ok but its the fourth one i have seen this year puntos are bad news get rid of it get a new one but the Mk 1 punto is a deathtrap and i mean it. they break down fall apart and catch fire.

Please get rid. sadly fiats are the worst cars on the used car market. (after mine) I've worked in garages for some time and they only get worse with age. sorry. F ix. I t. A gain. T omorrow In all seriousness its bound to be the Ignition system. plugs, leads, disributor cap. Or the clutch.

First of all....is it possible you put the wrong fuel in last time you fuelled up?
If not...then i would say that you are having some sort of electrical or Clutch problem....Garage. Shouldn't cost too much to repair either way..not above 200-300 Tops

Take it to a garage possibly your clutch if it was an acrid smell like burning.Or it could simply be your exhaust.Regards Mick

Yes, I know a bit about cars and it's impossible to tell from your description what's wrong. Hope the garage isn't far away.
