I asked a question earlier about which one was the most dangerous snake; the black mamba or the king cobra. However, I got to thinking.

What is the most dangerous, non-venomous snake, in terms of population and how close it is with humans? I would think the anaconda but the python and boa constrictors sound more forboding.

The most dangerous non-venomous snake would be any of the five giant constrictors.

1. Scrub Python of Australia
2. African Rock Python
3. Burmese Python
4. Reticulated Python
5. Green Anaconda

All these snakes can grow up to 20ft and are perfectly capable of killing an adult human being. Although some are more aggressive than others, they all should be treated with respect for their coils are just as deadly as the venom of a cobra or mamba.

Of all the constricting snakes (Boas, Pythons, Anacondas), the most dangerous seems to be the Anaconda. It does most of its attacking from murky waters of the rivers of S America - you don't see it, but it has heat seeking ability to get you.

There is some argument whether it is the longest snake, but it is quite definitely the heaviest. So, it has much more chance of crushing and swallowing something the size of a human.

Warning: do not swim in the Amazon.

Only a small percentage of the world's snake population is dangerous. 80% of them live in Australia. The snakes you find in the pet trade are far from being poisonous. If this is your first snake, I would recommend a cornsnake or a ribbon snake. Ball pythons are ok, but they tend to get respiratory problems if not care for properly (usually at the hands of inexperienced snake owners). Cornsnakes actually come in MANY different colors. They get to be about 4-5ft long while the ribbon snakes stay around 2ft. Ribbon snakes can actually eat fish left in a water bowl in their cage. Please make sure you do your research before buying any type of snake though.

The immediate guess would be the anaconda because it is so big and strong, but there have never been a recorded incident where an anaconda has killed a human. I don't know about pythons and boas though.

For example, here's some of the Australia death causes in 10 year:
Crocodile attacks 8
Shark attacks 11
Lightning strikes 19
Bee stings 20
Snakes (most of them: venomous tiger snakes and venomous brown snakes) 50
SCUBA diving accidents 88
Drownings and submersion 3367
Traffic accidents 32772

So you see, non-venomous snakes are hardly any problem, if at all.

The one that catches you off guard and starts to go up your pant leg and scares you while you are driving to work and that causes you to swerve and crash head on into a cement truck and get killed.:)
